Iron is an important element in the human body and is required to produce healthy red blood cells. Insufficient iron intake can result in anaemia. Many foods are fortified with extra iron such as cereals and certain types of bread. Other foods naturally contain high levels of iron, such as red meats, fish, poultry and leafy green vegetables. Iron supplements can be taken by those whose intake of iron is insufficient although a medical practitioner should always be consulted before taking any supplements. Iron can cause constipation in humans so other medication is often prescribed to overcome this problem.
Ferrous Sulphate has a long history in the manufacture of ink and also in the dying of wools. Ferrous Sulphate can also be used to stain limestone and concrete. Maple wood can be stained a silvery colour with the application of Ferrous Sulphate.
Horticulturists use Ferrous Sulphate as a moss killer and a lawn conditioner. It can also be mixed with compost and dug into soil to treat iron chlorosis, with long-lasting effects. Ferrous Sulphate is added to the cooling water of brass tube turbine condensers as it forms a protective coating on the inside of the tubes and helps them to become resistant to corrosion. Ferrous Sulphate is also used in the treatment of sewage in water treatment plants.
